I
Unit: Critical and Aesthetic
Theme: Expressing Opinion About Art Using VTS
Introduction
VTS
(Visual Thinking Strategies) can aid the teacher of Dance to bring the
field to the realm of critical thinking. Articulating ideas about Dance
(whether in oral, written, visual and/or pictorial form) helps students
to see Dance as more than just entertainment.
II
Learning Objectives
- Understand the concept of VTS
- Explain how VTS can be adapted to Dance Studies
- Gather awareness of the importance of developing critical opinion about dance aesthetics
- Experience a session where VTS is applied to Dance
III
Main Lesson
Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a learner-centered instructional
method used to examine and find meaning in visual art. Using a painting
from the Terra Foundation collection, Samuel F. B. Morse’s iconic Gallery of the Louvre
(1831–33), Yenawine facilitates a VTS discussion, followed by an
examination of how the discussion was constructed. Classroom and museum
educators and docents interested in learner-centered teaching methods
will find this video to be a very useful resource.
