Teaching and Learning: Collage

Unit: Student Learning

Theme: Collage

Introduction

To plan pedagogy effectively, teachers need to have a theory of how people learn.  They need to examine all factors relevant to learning.  Today, we will see how this works when organizing material for a collage based on the concept of the ethnosphere explained by Wade Davis. We will also get familiar with the work of Jacob Intilé in order to produce a collage that illustrates the interconnections of culture and nature.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the connection between the ethnosphere and a collage.
  • Explain how a collage can enhance children's creativity
  • Gather an awareness of the role of the teacher in finding solutions to the buzzword mace of pedagogic fads.
  • Experience what it would be like to collaborate with the group to create a collage.

COLLAGE

A collage is an artistic composition made of various materials (such as paper, cloth, or wood) glued on a surface cut pictures from magazines.

There are 4 Types of Collages:
  • Papier collé. Taken from the French term meaning “pasted paper” or “paper cut-out,” papier collé, or paper collage, is a collaging technique in which printed or decorated paper is applied to a surface, such as canvas, to create a new image. ...
  • Découpage.  Decoupage or découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects, gold leaf, and other decorative elements. Commonly, an object like a small box or an item of furniture is covered by cutouts from magazines or from purpose-manufactured papers.
  • Photomontage.  Photomontage is the process and the result of making a composite photograph by cutting, gluing, rearranging and overlapping two or more photographs into a new image. Sometimes the resulting composite image is photographed so that the final image may appear as a seamless physical print.
  • Assemblage. Assemblage is an artistic form or medium usually created on a defined substrate that consists of three-dimensional elements projecting out of or from the substrate. It is similar to collage, a two-dimensional medium

A Note to Remember

The making of a collage can be a creative way to bring attention to other academic subjects. It allows students to use art to make a point.

The Ethnosphere

By Wade Davis

The class will be introduced to National Geographic's Explorer Wade Davis who teaches about what he calls the ethnosphere, a word he uses to describe the imaginative contributions of humanity to the planet. He makes emphasis on people's stories. They are global resources, just like air, water, and green life.  Just like the biosphere, the ethnosphere is also threatened by rampant modernization and globalization.

(22:19 min)

Question 4

According to Wade Davis what is the ethnosphere?

Question 5

According to Wade Davis, what has been lost in terms of humanity's cultural heritage?

Question 6

(11:37)

According to Wade Davis, what is ethnocide?

Question 7

What did the Neolithic Revolution change for the human species?

Artist Jacob Intilé

Turning Pages of Magazines Into Surreal Collages

Jacob Intilé is a Vancouver based artist who captures the seriousness of each creature as we realize them in nature. However, through his work he is able to give them new depth in their collaged transformations. They become kings or emperors from another dimension. As expressed by Cynthia Schmelzer in strictlypaper.com, his "ornate and otherworldly costumes all use of symmetry as an underlying theme throughout."

Collage is a technique of an art production, primarily used in the visual arts, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole.

Question 8

After watching these video, how would you define the word collage?

Students' Work

1

Aiden, Claudia, Carlos, Daniel, Jason

We think we should incentivise different methods for teaching. Paying teachers more would help give teachers the motivation and the opportunity to innovate. Teachers should have a drive to teach and bring their unique ideas to teacing their subjects. Through experimentation, we can help students find the methods that work for them and set classes apart from each other. Nothing is universal, so we need to find what works for each teacher/class/subject/student. The main idea is that we try new things and actually commit to them.

Title: Mind Over Matter

The main idea in our collage is the importance of taking risks. People need to try things that are unconventional or out of their comfort zone in order to succeed. You have to be willing to fail, to "Get Real"

A less structured environment to help students feel less embarrassed to admit they do not understand something would help promote healthy learning styles. It is important that the students feel safe with not only their teacher but with their classmates so creating a healthy learning environment is key. Including work that incorporates different learning styles such as visual, auditory, tactile, and more to make sure the needs of each student is met.

Our project is called "Create Art'. The purpose of our piece was to combine different pieces of art that did not coherently go together but were still products of creativity. Different versions of art all stem from the same idea of using your mind to think outside of the box and create something. It was important to our group that our piece was chaotic, representing the different styles of art and creativity.

We said that it is essential for students to have individualized attention so that the teachers and students can build a relationship with one another. In order to learn it is important to create a safe environment and we think that begins with a trusting teacher-student relationship. We suggest smaller class sizes and the opportunity for students to meet with teachers one on one. Additionally, instead of randomizing which kids are in which class, we suggest a more personalized approach that matches child learning style with the teachers style of teaching.

Teaching has becoming politicized and publicized a lot more than years past, which contributes to the "microtrends" and fades we see in educational pedagogy. We believe the solution to this isn't about the actual teaching methods but rather about the assessment of student knowledge and success. The problem of teaching as students being "talked-at" was realized everywhere at once and so teachers and outside contributors are trying to solve the problem quickly instead of methodically working to find new methods through collaboration with classroom teachers, rather than random ideas provided by professionals who have never taught in a classroom. The solution involves looking at teaching through a holistic view, rather than a bunch of small techniques back to back. Integrating the arts into lessons of reading and science can enhance that holistic view and give teachers more agency other their own classrooms, rather than being governed by whatever buzzword the district is promoting that month/semester.

We think schools could benefit by changing the environment from a strict lecture based environment to a more creative and engaging environment, which creates less stress and makes school a place kids want to go to learn and not want to leave. Kids differ and learns in different way, meaning they will not all excell in the same path and the classes, so we should start earlier making kids able to learn what they are interested in. This will create a whole different atmosphere in school and learning as a whole.

Changing the system

Kate zacca, Sebastian Omeechevarria, Olivia Auffarth

- encourage more teaching outside the classroom

- create a company that creates whollistic curriculums

- more course evals so the course is more personal to the students ( a whole day where students get to speak their feelings)

- student teaching days - they come and prepare their lesson on the topic and teach

- activity based/ hands on experiential learning.

Teachers should get feedback from students so that they feel heard. They incorporate different engaging types of learning. They shouldn't punish kids for not understanding certain things. Adjusting learning plans to the students and changing pace to better accommodate their needs.
